It's an international day highlighting the struggle for women's rights, and in particular for an end to gender inequality.
The day has its roots in the history of feminist struggles on the European and American continents. On February 28, 1909, a "National Women's Day" was celebrated in the United States at the call of the Socialist Party of America.
Following a proposal by Clara Zetkin in Copenhagen in August 1910, the Socialist International Women celebrated the first "International Women's Day" on March 19, 1911, demanding women's right to vote, the right to work and an end to discrimination in the workplace. Since then, rallies and demonstrations have been held every year.
